2024 Milo Kessler ’21 Math Major Fellowship Reception
The 2024 reception for the Milo Kessler ’21 Math Major Fellowship brought together faculty, students, alumni, family, and friends to celebrate the nine Math Major seniors named 2023 Fellows: Sadie Allspaw, Md Almasrafii, David Armogan, Samuel Byars, Yihan He, Luke Opalack, Charlie O’Sullivan and Sabina Wolfe. The fund keeps alive the memory of Milo Kessler ’21, a beloved and gifted Math Major who passed away in March 2022.
The first five Milo Kessler ’21 Math Major Fellows are now college freshmen: Cyrus Castellanos, Carnegie Mellon University; Ela Ekincioglu, University of Wisconsin; Rommy Sasson, Yale University; Dan Viderman, University of Michigan; and Jitian Wang, New York University.
"It was wonderful for us to attend the second annual Milo Kessler '21 Math Major Fellows Fund reception in the Math Major room at Brooklyn Tech, where the 9 new Milo Math Fellows discussed their summer experiences with Tech alumni, students, teachers, and Milo's family and friends,” Milo’s parents, Daryl Kessler and Alana Fishberg, noted. “We felt so inspired hearing about all of the incredible work Milo's Fund has enabled these well-deserving Milo Fellows to accomplish. The Fund has also created a beautiful way to continue Milo's math legacy at Brooklyn Tech.”
Sadie Allspaw- Sadie studied complex math for six weeks/eight hours per day at Hampshire College Summer Studies in Math (HCSSiM). Her studies included Number Theory, Graph Theory, and Combinatorics. Topics will also include Knot Theory and Projective Geometry.
Md Almasrafi- Md researched One Dimension Particle Physics at Queens College with Professor Azriel Genack. Md worked on optics and electromagnetism and used this knowledge to assist in the lab and catalog information. His optical research included working with disordered systems of particles under the theory of statistics where repeated randomness eventually leads to generality.
David Armogan- David was involved in multiple math programs during the summer of 2023. He continued his work on his website, Millennium Investments, which teaches important financial concepts to young investors. David also participated in Teach Me Wall Street, where he learned about trading, investing, and cryptocurrencies.
Samuel Byars- Sam worked with AI-Learners (https://ai-learners.com/), a Math tech company started by former Brooklyn Tech Mathematics Major Adele Smolansky ’19 that is designed to make math more accessible to elementary school students through personalized computer games and analytics.
Yihan He- Yihan created a YouTube channel to design math videos using animation and graphics to help explain complex math like Graph Theory, Number Theory, and other sophisticated math concepts.
Luke Opalack- Luke also worked with AI-Learners with the goal of spreading love for math.
Charlie O'Sullivan- Charlie also worked with AI-Learners, with a focus on helping children with disabilities learn math through AI games.
Lucas Papamitsakis- Lucas built his own Deep Learning and Mathematical Models to predict Multiple Sclerosis (MS) development based on MS patients' data and MRI scans. He worked with a Convolutional Neural Network, which helped him gain experience in Gradient Descent and Multivariable Calculus, as they are vital to maximize accuracy. Linear Algebra and Statistics will play a large role in feeding data into the model.
Sabina Wolfe- Sabina is involved in the Lang Science Program, which is a partnership with the American Museum of National History. As a part of this program, Sabina took classes instructed by scientists and work with mentors on research projects that are presented at an end-of-year symposium. In particular, last summer, Sabina participated in a field research intensive in mathematics, spending 30 hours/week at the Museum. Sabina was also involved with the FRESH (Fordham Regional Environmental Sensor for Healthy Air) Air Project, a citizen science initiative started by Fordham professor Stephen Holler, which focuses on the disproportionate asthma and respiratory disease rates of children in lower income public schools in all five boroughs. Results were monitored by Sabina and she developed curricula around the collected data.
