2024 Wingate Award Winners: Scholar-Athletes Excel in Academics and Athletics
The Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation is proud to support many of the school’s exceptional teams and clubs through our Jeffrey H. Haitkin '62 Faculty Grants Program, one of our longest-standing and most impactful initiatives. This program ensures that Brooklyn Tech students have the resources they need to excel both academically and athletically.
The prestigious PSAL Wingate Award, which recognizes the most outstanding senior student-athlete in each sport from New York City public high schools, was awarded to several Technites this year. These 2024 Wingate Award winners exemplify the dedication, perseverance, and spirit that Brooklyn Tech fosters in all its students.
Elias Shaw-Rothberg ’24
Elias Shaw-Rothberg, the 2024 Gold Medalist for the highest GPA in the Social Science Research Major, earned the 2024 Wingate Award for Boys Soccer, NYC Public School Athletic League’s top scholar-athlete honor. Now a freshman at Yale, Elias continues to shine both academically and athletically. His twin sister Gracie ’24 is a first-year student at Northwestern University, and their grandfather, William (Billy) Rothberg ’60, proudly watched them graduate at Barclays Center last June.
Aisha Mowla ’24
Aisha Mowla ’24, who describes herself as “captivated by chemistry,” was not only a member of the Alumni Foundation’s Weston Research Scholars Program but also the 2024 Wingate Award winner in Girls Varsity Fencing, which she captained. Now a freshman at Stony Brook University, Aisha was president of Brooklyn Tech’s Student Equity Team and a crew trainer at her local McDonald’s. With dreams of becoming a heart surgeon, she is committed to saving lives and giving back to her community through social justice.
Elijah Gentry ’24
Born in Austin, Texas, Elijah Gentry ’24 is now a freshman at Pepperdine University and the 2024 Wingate Award recipient for Boys Varsity Cross Country. Elijah’s accomplishments are truly remarkable: he holds the indoor school record for the 5,000-meter and 3,200-meter runs, was New York State champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and became a second-team All-American in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. With nine school track and field records, Elijah continues to blaze new trails in both sports and academics.
Ivy Liu ’24
Ivy Liu ’24, now a freshman at the University of Notre Dame, was the 2024 Wingate Award winner for Girls Varsity Badminton. As team captain, she led her team to victory in the 2023 and 2024 NYC PSAL Championships and placed third in the 2024 Individual Championships. Under her leadership, the team remained undefeated division champions for three consecutive years. Ivy has also interned at Chyron, the Chinese-American Planning Council, and NYS Senator Iwen Chu’s office, reflecting her strong sense of leadership both on and off the court.
