Arthur Lewis ’42 Celebrates 100 Years of Innovation and Service
Arthur Lewis, Brooklyn Tech Class of 1942, marked his 100th birthday on October 13, 2025, celebrating with family and friends in California.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Lewis attended Brooklyn Technical High School during the early years of World War II—a transformative education he still recalls with fondness. “He tells stories to this day about how much fun he had at Tech—building a Wilson cloud chamber and getting all sorts of hands-on engineering experience,” said his granddaughter, Courtney Lewis.
After graduating from Tech, Lewis joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a radar operator in the Pacific during World War II. Following his service, he began his career as an engineer at Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, where he contributed to the development of radar fire control systems for the F-86D Sabre, one of the first jet interceptors to integrate radar-guided missile systems.
Though he later pursued law—building a distinguished career as a California criminal defense attorney who argued before the United States Supreme Court—Lewis often credited Brooklyn Tech as the place where he first realized his potential.
“Arthur Lewis embodies the best of what it means to be a Technite: disciplined, principled, and deeply committed to service and excellence,” said Courtney Ulrich, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation. “His achievements continue to inspire new generations of students to dream boldly and use their talents for the greater good.”
Now celebrating a century of life marked by innovation, service, and integrity, Arthur Lewis remains a proud Technite whose story reflects the enduring spirit of Brooklyn Tech.
