Brooklyn Tech Graduates Leading the Charge at CUNY
On October 22, 2024, CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos visited Brooklyn Technical High School, the nation’s largest brick-and-mortar high school and one of CUNY’s top feeder schools, to distribute “Welcome to CUNY” letters to seniors. Hosted by Brooklyn Tech principal David Newman, the event kicked off the “Welcome to CUNY” campaign, part of a broader effort to simplify the transition from high school to college for New York City Public School (NYCPS) students. During their visit, Chancellor Matos Rodríguez and Chancellor Aviles-Ramos highlighted Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement that CUNY is waiving the application fee for NYCPS seniors until November 15, 2024, as part of the statewide College Application Month campaign. This initiative aims to remove financial barriers to higher education, helping more students pursue their college dreams.

Brooklyn Tech continues to lead the way in sending students to CUNY, with 400 Class of 2024 graduates now first-year students at CUNY. The school also delivered the highest number of applicants to CUNY in the 2023-2024 school year, with over 1,000 students of approximately 1,300 applying. Brooklyn Tech’s deep ties to CUNY are reflected in the tens of thousands of alumni who have walked the halls of both institutions, including Rhodes Scholars, Nobel Prize winners, and prominent leaders across many fields.
CUNY’s efforts to ensure equitable access to higher education are further reinforced by partnerships with NYCPS. All NYCPS seniors on track to graduate will receive personalized letters from CUNY and NYC Public Schools, outlining their college options and providing resources to navigate the admissions process. Last year, over 80% of CUNY’s freshmen came from NYC public schools, underscoring the importance of these initiatives.
Chancellor Matos Rodríguez remarked, “By sending these letters and waiving the application fees, we are reminding high school seniors that CUNY, with its incredible value proposition, is right on their doorstep offering an exceptional education for an affordable price.” Chancellor Aviles-Ramos, herself a CUNY alumna, added, “It is the duty of our public school system to create equitable access to post-secondary opportunities, and it is an honor to stand with CUNY to dismantle barriers that have historically limited student potential.”
