Donor Spotlight: Professor John Eschemuller ’65, P.E. — Building a Legacy for Brooklyn Tech’s Civil Engineers
Brooklyn Tech alumnus Professor John Eschemuller ’65, P.E, a distinguished civil engineer, educator, author, and philanthropist, has long credited his success to the education he received at Brooklyn Technical High School, City College’s Grove School of Engineering and Pace University where he received his Executive MBA Degree. Now, through remarkable generosity and deep-rooted gratitude, he is giving back — ensuring future generations of aspiring engineers have access to the same transformative opportunities that shaped his life.
This spring, Professor Eschemuller visited Tech to personally donate a copy of his latest book, Urban Construction Project Management, to the school library. He also met with Brooklyn Tech’s Chief Educational Officer, Matt Mandery ’61, to discuss his ongoing support of the Civil Engineering Department and his recent decision to include Tech in his estate plans.
“It’s my way of paying something back for the excellent education I received at Tech, which laid the foundation for everything that followed,” said Eschemuller. “It allowed me to pursue my career aspirations and live my version of the American Dream.”
A Lasting Gift for Future Engineers
A longstanding donor to the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, Professor Eschemuller has chosen to generously commit a significant portion of his estate to benefit Brooklyn Tech’s Civil Engineering students. His gifts provide:
- Scholarships for Civil Engineering students who go on to study at CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering, continuing the path Eschemuller once took himself.
- Support for educational enrichment within the Civil Engineering Department, expanding access to resources and experiences that will prepare students for success in the engineering profession.

In addition to his planned gift, Professor Eschemuller maintains close relationships with faculty and staff, with annual visits to BTHS to chat with the next generation of CE students. He also attended Brooklyn Tech’s 2025 Homecoming, celebrating his 60th reunion and reconnecting with the school and alumni community that inspired his lifelong passion for engineering and education.
From Brooklyn Tech to Engineering Icon
John Eschemuller’s career in engineering and construction management spans more than four decades. He began his professional journey at New York Telephone (now Verizon), managing landmark projects including its corporate headquarters and major switching centers across the city. Rising through the ranks to executive positions at NYNEX and later Structure Tone, he oversaw some of New York’s most high-profile commercial construction projects — from the Bloomberg L.P. headquarters to Columbia University’s law and business schools.
He also became an adjunct professor at Pace University, in the Graduate School of Business, and taught ‘Quantitative Methods in Business’ in their MBA program, for 24 years while working full time.
He later became an associate professor at NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate, helping grow the graduate Construction Management Program from its inception to over 125 students. In 2008, he coauthored Urban Construction Project Management, now a reference text for students and professionals alike.
Despite a highly successful career, Eschemuller never forgot where it all began. Raised in a working-class family, he worked multiple jobs to fund his education and was the beneficiary of a free public education at Tech and City College. That experience left a lasting impression — one that now fuels his commitment to opening doors for the next generation.
“I was fortunate,” he reflects. “I want students who are in the same position I was — talented, hardworking, and in need of opportunity — to know that someone believes in them.”
Gratitude, Legacy, and Impact
The Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation is deeply honored by Professor Eschemuller’s commitment. His planned gift is not only a powerful testament to his belief in the value of a Brooklyn Tech education but also a blueprint for meaningful alumni engagement and long-term impact.
“John’s story is truly inspiring,” said Courtney Ulrich ’90, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation. “He exemplifies what it means to be a Tech alumnus — visionary, generous, and committed to giving back. His legacy will empower generations of students to follow in his footsteps.”
