Dr. Lawrence Sirovich ’51
Mathematics, First Successful Facial Recognition Technology
In 1988, Sirovich and Kirby pioneered a standard linear algebra technique to improve face recognition, later known as Eigenfaces. It became the basis for most optical recognition systems and was widely used by law enforcement, security agencies, and banks. His other research covered a broad spectrum of science – modeling biological pathways, researching the dynamics of neurons, and conducting extensive studies in gas and liquid turbulence dynamics. His modeling of the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in 2003 became a major news story. He authored over 200 publications, including five books.
