Dr. Lawrence Sirovich ’51
Mathematics, First Successful Facial Recognition Technology
In 1988, Sirovich and Kirby pioneered a standard linear algebra technique to improve face recognition, now called Eigenfaces. It is the basis for most optical recognition systems and widely used in law enforcement, security agencies and banks. Other research covers a broad spectrum of science – modeling biological pathways, researching the dynamics of neurons, and extensive studies in gas and liquid turbulence dynamics. His modeling of the US Supreme Court decisions in 2003 was a major news story. He has authored over 200 publications including five books.
