The Brooklyn Technical High School Alumni Foundation mourns the passing of Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Sirovich, Class of 1950, a trailblazing mathematician, educator, and researcher whose extraordinary life journey began on the streets of Brooklyn and led to groundbreaking contributions in applied mathematics, neuroscience, and data science. A proud graduate of Brooklyn Tech, Dr. Sirovich passed away peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by family on September 16, 2025.

Born to immigrant parents in Brooklyn in 1933, Larry often credited Brooklyn Tech with changing the trajectory of his life. Growing up in Ridgewood and Brownsville, he faced early adversity in neighborhoods where scholarship was rarely nurtured—but his admission to Tech opened a world of possibility. As he would later say, often and with deep gratitude, “Brooklyn Tech saved my life.” Surrounded by peers who shared his intellectual drive and teachers who recognized and supported his talent, Larry thrived, setting the stage for a lifetime of scientific achievement.

He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed a Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering through a joint program with Hopkins and NYU. His academic career led him to professorships at Brown University (where he served as a tenured professor in Applied Mathematics) and Rockefeller University (as Adjunct Professor in the Hartline-Ratliff lab), where he pursued a wide range of interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Sirovich’s scientific contributions spanned fluid dynamics, neuroscience, mathematical modeling, and even legal analysis—notably developing innovative methods to visualize patterns in Supreme Court decisions. He authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and five scholarly books and was a recipient of prestigious honors including Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships. He remained intellectually active well into his nineties, continually inspired by new ideas and collaborators. He was inducted in 2018 into the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Hall of Fame.

At the core of Larry’s life was an unwavering commitment to purpose. He loved his family deeply—his wife of nearly 65 years, Carole; their children, Brenda and Matthew (Meredith); and grandchildren, Lucas and Eliza. He also loved his work, which brought him immense joy, meaning, and community. Those who knew him recall his insatiable curiosity, quick wit, intellectual generosity, and unrelenting standards—for himself and others
