(1927–2025)
The Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation honors the life and legacy of Nicholas Z. Malachias, who passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, at the age of 98.
Born on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Mr. Malachias’ remarkable journey took him from New York to Cairo during World War II and back home again, where he went on to earn degrees from City College, Columbia University, and NYU.
From January 1959 to June 1990, he taught English and Journalism at Brooklyn Tech, inspiring generations of Technites with his sharp intellect, humor, and deep humanity. Known for his engaging storytelling and unshakable dedication to his students, Mr. Malachias created a classroom environment that nurtured both curiosity and confidence. He started the Journalism class, creating its syllabus, and later served as assistant to the English department chairman. He said of his more than 30 years at Tech, "Those were happy times for me."
Teaching at Tech was not just a profession, but a privilege."
