Tommy Holmes ’35
National League Record Setter
Tommy Holmes, as a team member of the Boston Braves, set a National League record of hitting safely in 37 straight games in 1945. It was second to Joe DiMaggio’s Major League record of 56 games. His record held until Pete Rose’s streak of 44 games in 1978. In that same year, he led the major leagues in homeruns (28), hits (224) and slugging percentage (.577). He was named Sporting News Player of the Year in 1945. Later, he managed the Braves for parts of the 1951 and '52 seasons and worked in the Mets community relations program from 1973 to 2003.
