Year In Review – 2023
As we bid farewell to an extraordinary year, the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation is thrilled to reflect on the incredible moments that made 2023 truly special. From heartwarming reunions to groundbreaking events, your support has been the driving force behind our success.
In January, the emotional return of hundreds of new graduates for Recent Alumni Day set the tone for a year filled with meaningful connections. The Milo Kessler ‘21 Math Major Fellows Reception allowed us to honor Milo’s legacy while celebrating the achievements of our first cohort of fellows.
Spring brought the Alumni Dinner Cruise in New York Harbor, when more than 400 attendees joined us for an unforgettable evening, and Homecoming at Tech, where more than 600 alumni got to see firsthand what is new and different – and what is unchanged – at our beloved Alma Mater. The Foundation’s commitment to education continued with two impactful Future World Vision (FWV) STEM Pathways Consortium events, providing invaluable experiences for students, parents, and educators from seven Brooklyn public middle schools. We are already gearing up for more as our next FWV event is set to dazzle middle schoolers and get them hooked on STEM on May 18, 2024.
The Jeffrey M. Haitkin ’62 Faculty Grants program, which has provided $2.2 million in funding and more than 1,000 grants since its inception to support transformational learning experiences, awarded 75 new grants for this academic year. Funded projects include everything from a living wall to materials for genetics research, the Debate and Math teams, an array of athletics teams and drone certification for NSBE.
June was a month of pride as we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating seniors at the Weston Research Scholars Program Whitecoat ceremony and welcomed 1500 new alumni. Meet inspiring members of the Class of 2023 here. The commencement keynote from Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot ’73 added a touch of magic, marking his return to Tech after 50 years.
As summer drew to a close, the Con Edison Internship Program, founded in 2000 as a partnership between Con Ed, the Alumni Foundation, and school, concluded with impressive presentations from the interns. Nine extraordinary new recipients were selected for summer 2023 fellowships from the Milo Kessler ’21 Math Major Fellows Fund. Our collaboration with Rise Up at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine expanded in its second year to create new opportunities for gifted Technites from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.

Fall was a season of innovation, featuring the second Future World Vision event and the debut of Fong and Lee Foundation Research Stipend recipients. Industrial Design students showcased their creativity in the spring and fall with exhibitions at UrbanGlass, thanks to the Thomas Volpe ’53 UrbanGlass Initiative.
Our illustrious alumni continue to receive accolades in a wide array of fields. Catch up with Tatia Mays-Russell ’84, CFO of the Major League Baseball Players Association, MacGyver creator Lee Zlotoff ’70 and entertainment attorney L. Londell McMillan '83, among many other Technites, on our website and by following us on social media.
Brooklyn Tech remains a U.S. News & World Report Gold Medal School and is the #4 Niche Standout School in the U.S., while wrapping June with 10 NYC Public School Athletic League Championships and two new championships in the fall (Boys XC and Girls Soccer).
As we gear up for a busy start to the new year, Recent Alumni Day on January 5th is already at capacity with 500 registrants. Don’t miss our Alumni Evening at Liberty Science Center on February 12th and mark your calendars for the Annual Alumni Dinner Cruise and Homecoming at Tech on April 12-13, 2024. Early-bird tickets for Homecoming events are available only until December 31st (or 200 tickets are sold), so don’t delay!
